Protruck News Release
2006 SCORE Tecate Baja 500
June 2-4, 2006, Ensenada, Mexico

"Challenging!!" That was the word everyone who finished the SCORE Tecata Baja 500 this year had to say about the tight,
technical, dusty, foggy, and downright tough northern Baja race course.
With much patience and perseverance, the seasoned Baja Protruck
team of Rob Reinertson and Rick. D. Johnson took the checkered flag back in Ensenada first and 34th overall in a field of
268 4-wheeled vehicles. Some prayers were said as the truck started sputtering and quit a mile and a half from their fueling pit, but the
Ford restarted and kept moving and made the waiting RJR crew with the VP fuel. Their win has put the Ford team in a very good opportunity
to grab the Baja Protruck Championship for 2006.
Seated in his Mastercraft seat for all but 100 miles of this year's Baja 500 was Robbie Pierce in the #230 Mastercraft sponsored
Chevy Protruck. Bill Varnes spelled Robbie on the "fun" Mike's loop back to Trinidad,
then Robbie took it to the finish for a hard earned 2nd place in the Baja Protruck class. He was quite tired after 13 hours of desert
racing but knew that his team had accomplished something that few people ever get to realize, a finish at the Baja 500.
The newcomers in the Baja Protruck ranks, Joe Bednar and George Peters in their #299 Chevy Protruck have been having a great time.
With a 3rd place at the 500, their points for the Baja Protruck Championship this year are looking very good.
There were 10 Baja Protrucks who made the 18 hour time limit. Jason and Rich Voss, son and dad team, finished 3rd physically but
ended up 4th in class by a mere 46 seconds in the #235 Ford Protruck. They also stayed consistent, but had some carb trouble that
slowed them a bit.
The current points leader, who was racing in his family's native country, Gustavo Vildosola Jr in the Toyota #204, had his share
of mishaps but the Mexicana Logistics crew and on-board mechanic, Jimmy Davidson, patched the Protruck back together
for a 5th place finish. Brian Freedman> drove the last half of the race for "Tavo", helping keep the team in position for
the year end Championship.
3 minutes later the Washington state team of Jim Wasson and Dave Creagan brought the bright orange #203 Chevy in for sixth.
Another new team to start in Baja Protruck is Chris Lucas and Roberto Guerrero from Ohio in the #245 Castrol Ford.
They have been getting some valuable "hands on" experience plus seeing some beautiful Baja Mexico scenery and ran 7th at the finish.
JR Stanley and Mike Grover in the #222 yellow Ford started up front but got a flat early and watched all the Protrucks go by,
but rallied back for an 8th place in the Baja Protruck class.
Gary Magness in the #250 Mango racing Ford took 9th and Rick L. Johnson in the Milgard #236 Toyota was 10th.
Al Hogan, Charley McDowell, Rob Kittleson, Cody Swanty, and Tom Koch didn't make the 18 hour time limit for the Baja 500,
there's always the next race. The Baja Protrucks again proved their durability and competitiveness as 67% of the field crossed the finish line.
Thank you to all of the teams, sponsors, and families in the Baja Protruck class for your continued support and participation in one of the
best classes of racing in the world.
