Protruck News Release
SCORE San Felipe 250
March 11, 2006, San Felipe, Mexico

Four Protruck teams headed southeast for the 2006 SCORE San Felipe 250 race, with the Washington state team of Dave Creagen and Jim Wasson traveling the farthest with their "dayglo" orange #203 Chevy. Mexicali favorite, Gustavo Vildosola, Jr. and his #204 Toyota team had the shortest travel time. Jason Voss from northern California brought their #235 Ford to challenge this rough, sandy sprint, as well as Protruck newcomer Cody Swanty in the #215 Dodge from Arizona.
The four Protrucks took off the line 30 seconds apart at 9:30 Saturday morning, the Mexicana Logistics Toyota of Gustavo drawing 1st off the line, followed by Jason in the Stone Creek Quarry sponsored Ford, the Bi-Polar Racing orange Chevy of Dave and Jim in 3rd slot, and the Swanty Motorsports Dodge Ram with Cody and Rob taking off last. Gustavo had a shock situation before handing the Toyota over to Bryan Freeman but it didn't cause any trouble for them as they came across the line first in the Protruck class.
"We started on a good rhythm," commented Vildosola. "At mile 50 we broke the right shock, we were cautious not to cause a problem to anyone. The course was different when we pre-ran it, all the vehicles practicing really chewed it up. The sand was very loose. But arriving in first, you forget all the problems. We have done three races this year and we have won all three of them."
Jason and co-pilot Johnny were staying on the pace until they had a flat and then ran out of fuel just before a scheduled stop. They were rescued by dad, who had the fuel and they finished second. Cody heard from Rob's son on the radio that he felt it was going to snow on the west side of the course and Cody thought, "no way", until they got there in the Dodge. Cody said, "it was so cold and raining that I felt like it was snowing!" The Dodge ran great until some rocks found the driveshaft and it had to be changed a couple of times costing them quite a bit of time. They finished with 9 minutes to spare on the clock.
Dave and Jim were charging hard in their Chevy Protruck through the Baja desert, but at mile 129 the bright orange body left some orange stripes on the course as the truck endoed and finished on its side. Dave and Jim got out and collected their thoughts, the crew showed up and got the truck driveable again after borrowing a shock from the Vildosola crew. Jim was checked out and released from the St. James Infirmary and went back to help chase the #203 Protruck. They did cross the finishline, but didn't quite make the cutoff time for the race.
It was a very interesting time for all the Protruck teams in San Felipe this year. All the drivers and crews are to be congratulated for their efforts.
See Driver Standings for all the current stats.
The Next event is the Terrible's Town 250 in Pahrump, Nevada.
