Protruck News Release
2006 BITD Terrible's town 250
April 28-30, 2006, Pahrump, NV

What drivers!! What excitement!! What a race!!
Charley McDowell posted his first win in the Baja Protruck Series at the Best in the Desert Terrible’s Town 250 in Pahrump, NV. It wasn’t an easy win, as Charley and co-rider Chad Cola had to stay consistent and not make any mistakes, especially with 13 other Protruck teams challenging them, as they raced their #1221 Ford Protruck 245 miles in the dusty, dry Nevada desert.
The racing was tight with several lead and position changes throughout the day. Jason Voss in the #1235 Ford Protruck picked up the physical lead toward the last part of the big lap and stayed ahead even though his carburetor was giving him trouble. He finished first, but on corrected time was in 2nd by a few minutes to the #1221 McDowell Motorsports Ford. Unfortunately, Voss was given a penalty by BITD at a road crossing which dropped him to 4th in the Protruck class.
The black #1212 Chevy of Ray McKinzie kept the Ford Protrucks from slacking off, as he charged hard, running his first race in over a year taking 2nd place for his and his team’s efforts. The brothers Ryan and Alex Staats raced the #1220 Ford Protruck to 3rd in class with only a couple of problems, steadily moving up from their 7th starting position. Another Chevy team who is having a great time in their first year of Protruck racing is Joe Bednar and George Peters in the #1299 Protruck finishing a respectable 5th. So far this season, the Mexicana Logistics #1204 Toyota Protruck of Gustavo Vildosola Jr. has come out on top, but a suspension problem around mile 90 set them back and they finished in 6th position.
Tom Koch in the #1229 Ford had a rough start as he lost a head gasket during qualifying on Friday. He and his dedicated team worked most of the night to fix it and finish 7th. Al Levinson and Rod Colbert in the BSR #1207 Ford were running very strong off the start, actually leading the Protruck class on corrected time, until they barrel rolled just outside of Pit 3! They drove into the pit after being put on all fours and their crew got them back in the race for a much deserved finish. Bill Driggs and his son-in-law Brad Wilkinson saw the checkered flag again in the #1205 Ford which is Protruck chassis number 1.
Al Hogan and Darren Donnes had a rough, hot day in the Nevada desert. A broken axle and then changing the drive belts slowed them up quite a bit, but the tough Montana boys made the loop for a finish. Two new teams made their debut in the Protruck class at the TT250, Pat Flynn with Mike Leavitt in the #1218 Ford and Chris Lucas and Eric Place in the #1245 Ford. Both teams learned a lot and made it back to the finish line to help the Protruck class have an 86% finishing rate. Rick L. Johnson in the #1236 Toyota lost a tranny early on while Wade Kelson with his #1202 Ford had overheating problems and lost a head gasket about half way through. Congratulations to all of the teams, their sponsors, and supporters for keeping Protruck a very close and competitive class.
